  • How often is it administered?

Yes. Once you're stabilized on your medication, most patients can work, drive, and carry out their

normal daily activities safely. We'll discuss any precautions during your appointments.

  • What are the most common side effects?

Clinical studies indicate that the most commonly reported side effects include sedation and dissociation. Spravato may cause drowsiness, fainting, dizziness, a spinning sensation, anxiety, or feelings of detachment from oneself, including altered perceptions of thoughts, emotions, time, and surroundings.

In clinical practice, the side effects most frequently observed include nausea, a bitter taste associated with the nasal spray, mild increases in blood pressure, fatigue, and mild dissociation.

Unlike many traditional antidepressant medications, Spravato is not associated with side effects such as weight gain or decreased libido.

  • Are there any other risks I should be aware of?

There is a recognized risk of misuse, as well as physical and psychological dependence, associated with Spravato treatment. Before starting therapy and throughout the course of treatment, your healthcare provider will evaluate you for signs of abuse or dependence. It is important to inform your provider if you have a history of substance misuse or dependence involving alcohol, prescription medications, or illicit drugs.

Fortunately, cases of abuse or dependence are uncommon in clinical practice. Most patients experience symptom improvement, achieve remission, and are able to taper off the medication without difficulty under medical supervision.

  • What should I do to prepare for treatment?

You should plan for a caregiver, family member, or trusted individual to drive you home after receiving Spravato. Do not drive, operate machinery, or engage in activities that require full alertness on the day of treatment. These activities should be avoided until the following day, after you have had a restful night of sleep.

Some individuals experience nausea or vomiting while taking Spravato. To help reduce this risk, you should avoid eating for at least two hours before treatment and refrain from drinking liquids for at least 30 minutes prior to administration.

  • Who should avoid Spravato?

Spravato is not approved for use in individuals under 18 years of age. It is contraindicated in patients with certain medical conditions, including aneurysmal vascular disease, arteriovenous malformations, a history of intracerebral hemorrhage, or known hypersensitivity to Spravato, ketamine, or any of the medication’s inactive ingredients.

To minimize risk, all patients undergo a comprehensive medical evaluation prior to being considered for Spravato treatment.

  • Will my insurance cover Spravato?

Insurance coverage for Spravato varies depending on your insurance provider and the details of your individual policy. Many insurance plans do provide coverage for Spravato treatment, but benefits and requirements can differ from plan to plan.

Our team works diligently to help obtain prior authorization for your Spravato treatment. If your insurance does not cover the medication, self-pay options are available. Financing and flexible payment plans may also be offered to help make treatment more accessible.
